Star, Idaho

About Star, Idaho: A Historic Gem in the Treasure Valley

The Roots of Star

Star, Idaho, is one of the earliest settlements in the Treasure Valley, with its origins tracing back to 1863. Many of the farmlands seen today from communities like Star Pointe and Inspirado toward the Boise River were originally homesteads serving travelers en route to the Boise Basin mines. As one of the later branches of the Oregon Trail passed through what is now Star, travelers often traversed up the ridges of Inspirado and Star Pointe to avoid the notorious mud bogs in the valley below.

A Star is Born

In 1870, Star’s first schoolhouse was built. One of the builders crafted a star and attached it to the door, creating a landmark that served as a beacon for miles. This star symbol soon became a trusted guide for weary travelers and miners, leading them to the schoolhouse, which offered lodging for the night. Over time, the area became known simply as “Star,” a fitting name for a community that shone brightly in the rugged Idaho landscape.

A Growing Town

The community's development continued with the establishment of its first post office in 1880, overseen by Shepp Gray, who also owned the local general store. Star’s first hotel opened its doors in 1888, providing even more support for travelers and residents alike. By 1905, Star was incorporated, with city limits stretching four miles in all directions. In 1907, the electric railroad linked Star to Boise, Eagle, Middleton, Nampa, and Meridian, fostering greater connectivity and economic growth in the region.

Challenges and Changes

In 1929, Idaho paved the highways around Star, but the city’s own segment required local funding. When local farmers resisted tax increases for the project, the city returned its charter, and Star was unincorporated, with the highway becoming state property. Decades later, on December 12, 1997, Ada County Commissioners reestablished Star’s geographic boundaries, appointing a mayor and city council, making it Ada County’s first newly incorporated city since 1971.

Star Today

Once a small town of around 500 people, Star has seen remarkable growth in recent years, thanks to its proximity to Boise, Eagle, and surrounding communities. Today, Star is one of Idaho’s fastest-growing cities, with a population nearing 13,000 residents, and it continues to balance its rich history with modern development, making it an ideal place to call home.
